Equine Adventure at Salt Creek Ranch seeks to provide opportunities for people to rediscover their connection to our environment. Our activities are enhanced through the use of quality horses, local landscapes, the Flint Hills Nature Trail, an 1870’s cemetery, and plant and wildlife observation. Located in central Osage County, Kansas, we are within easy driving distance of Topeka, Emporia, Wichita and Kansas City. Owned and operated by Carol Retzer, we offer years of horsemanship experience and ranch raised horses to ensure a safe and memorable experience to our guests. Since 1991 Carol has engaged in traveling the Santa Fe Trail on horseback, traveling from 80 to 260 miles each ride. For six years Carol and her late husband Rick organized this ride, leading from 20 to 80 people across the Kansas landscape. These days Carol takes every opportunity to ride one of the ranch’s many seasoned trail horses to work. We find both these activities help develop young horses into well rounded, solid, dependable mounts. Horsemanship lessons, by certified Level 1 Centered Riding instructor, are also offered for both beginner and intermediate level students.
We are excited to share our passion for this lifestyle with our guests! We own ten registered American Quarter Horses and the cutest Haflinger poniy in the state. Our horses have helped raise our children and now the grand kids, not to mention a long list of friends. We stress good horsemanship over simply "using" horses and taking time to develop both our and our horses' abilities. Prior to each ride every guest participates in basic horsemanship instruction to insure the safety of both guests and horses. We do place a weight limit of 200 pounds for each participants.
Salt Creek Ranch offers certified Centered Riding instruction! Students using Centered Riding techniques consistently see improvement in their riding skills and quality of movement of their horses. We have enjoyed integrating the Centered Riding approach into our program of activities!
